Ajarn Chai: Muay Thai Master
Ajarn Chai Sirisute was the first individual to bring the art of Muay Thai to America in the 1960s, dedicating his life to spreading authentic Thai boxing while emphasizing its principles of respect and self-improvement. He did not just teach techniques—he taught a mindset of perseverance, humility, and honor inside and outside the ring.
Muay Thai is often seen as just a combat sport, but at its core, it is a way of life that instills respect, honor, and integrity; attributes that are taken for granted or simply absent in the lives of so many “martial artists”. Rooted in Thai culture, Muay Thai teaches practitioners not only how to fight but also how to carry themselves with discipline and humility. Every training session begins and ends with respect—whether it’s bowing to your instructor, honoring your training partners, or upholding the traditions passed down through generations.
One of the greatest modern ambassadors of Muay Thai’s deeper values is Ajarn Chai Sirisute. He formally studied both Muay Thai as well as karate beginning at the age of six. He earned his black belt in Shorin-ryu at the age of 12, an age at which he also started to fight in the ring in Muay Thai.
Chai founded the Thai Boxing Association of the US in 1968 and has expanded it to more than 18 countries around the world. He maintains a busy seminar schedule traveling around the world teaching Muay Thai today.
In 1978, Arjan trained another great Master of Martial Arts, Dan Inosanto. Inosanto trained Muay Thai as a student in Chai's backyard and eventually introduced Chai to Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do. This friendship greatly helped Arjan extend awareness of Muay Thai in the US as well as internationally.
Through Ajarn Chai’s leadership, countless students have learned that Muay Thai is not just about striking; it’s about building character. His legacy continues to inspire martial artists worldwide to train hard, respect their lineage, and always uphold the integrity of the art.
As affiliates of Warriors Way International we here at Stricklands Martial Arts are proud to teach and practice the art of Muay Thai taught by Arjan Chai.
“When you fight relax yourself. The only thing that should be tight is your mind.” ~Arjan Chai
